The Bristol Heart Institute

The Bristol Heart Institute (BHI) is one of the Trust’s flagship buildings and is home to 21st century care.

It was designed by Bristol-based CODA Architects, in partnership with patients, staff, and the public, to deliver the very best in cardiac services, to the people of Bristol, the South West, and beyond.

The £61million building opened in May 2009. Since then, inpatients and outpatients have been seen for a full range of diagnostic and interventional treatments for heart conditions.

The BHI contains four catheter laboratories for cardiology diagnostic procedures and treatments, three operating theatres for open heart surgery and one hybrid catheter laboratory/theatre, one of a small number in the country, where surgeons and cardiologists carry out joint procedures. In an average year we carry out approximately 5,000 cardiology procedures and 1,600 heart operations.

The Unit also has a purpose built 11-bedded CCU and 24-bedded CICU. We also have three 24 bedded ward areas, one dedicated cardiology ward, one dedicated cardiac surgical ward and one unique ward with a cardiology, cardiac surgery and adult congenital heart disease patient cohort.

Specialised Services has a dedicated Education Lead Matron with Education Practice Facilitators based in CICU. Our nursing and medical teams are supported by a Consultant Cardiac Doctorate Nurse and a large team of Cardiac Surgical Nurse Practitioners, Surgical Care Practitioners, and Specialist Nurses in Acute Coronary Syndromes and cardiac rehabilitation, heart failure, arrhythmia, adult congenital heart and a large team of research nurses. The Division actively supports all staff groups to grow and develop in their roles and to continue an education pathway to support the excellent care provided for our patients.
