Miriam Cerezo Bueno – Staff Nurse

– New city, new department for Miriam –

For someone who’s only been working within the Trauma and Orthopaedic department at UH Bristol for a month, Miriam looks surprisingly relaxed. She joined us after moving to the UK from Spain and says: “I’m really enjoying my work. Every day is different and the work is extremely varied – but always good.”

Miriam started her nursing career in her home country, but didn’t feel like she was working in a very supportive environment. She says it’s completely different at our Trust: “Here, even if you’ve got a lot of patients to care for, everyone is so helpful, you always feel confident you can do the job. The facilities are great and all the nurses are lovely – it’s really brilliant working as part of a team, knowing there’s always someone who can help you with whatever you need to do.”

Talking about her new role, Miriam says it’s hard work and sometimes quite a physical job, but it’s also really rewarding. She says: “You’re working with many elderly patients, some who have dementia, but they’re all really lovely and incredibly grateful for everything you do. It’s a very enjoyable role and I get plenty of job satisfaction from it.”

Working in Trauma and Orthopaedics is a great place to learn a whole host of new skills. In fact Miriam says she’s learnt so much already: “You get to learn medical and surgical skills and how to use lots of different machines and equipment like hoists, equipment you might not have used before. If you’re prepared to work hard, you can learn a lot.”

When asked how she’s enjoying living and working in Bristol, Miriam is very enthusiastic and says: “I love Bristol. You can do whatever you want here. There are so many things to see and do, and it’s a really friendly place.”

So what next for Miriam? She’s not planning on going anywhere else soon, saying: “UH Bristol NHS Foundation Trust has such a great reputation and there are so many opportunities here, as well as fantastic support for career progression. I think I will always stay at this hospital.”
