We are very proud of the work our theatre departments do. We invite you to read more about our Adult and Paediatric Theatres below. This is a big opportunity in a vibrant city and we’d love for you to join us, as Bristol is one of the most popular, attractive, and historic cities in England. Take a look at our Open Day page and arrange a visit soon.
University Hospitals Bristol has 23 operating theatres housed in five departments; providing high quality care across numerous surgical specialities – whether Cardiac, Thoracic, Hepatobiliary, Maxillo Facial and ENT, or Gynaecology and Ophthalmic Surgery.
UHBristol’s Thoracic Surgery service leads the way with new and innovative procedures—we actually undertook the UK’s first minimally invasive lung reduction surgery.
We also have a Hybrid theatre which supports a thriving vascular interventional service undertaking minimally invasive cardiac and vascular procedures.
We always make sure our staff are supported with their learning and education, with access to great facilities, and the support of a friendly and experienced team.

We’re really proud of our Children’s Hospital and its facilities – especially now all the specialist paediatric surgery in Bristol has been centralised. If any of the below interests you, please do come in and talk to us about it.
- State-of-the-art operating theatre facilities in a dedicated paediatric environment
- Orientation and development opportunities – including access to our Simulation Centre
- Faculty of Children’s Nurse Education
- We are a Major Trauma Centre and a Specialist Burns Unit
We have both Band 5 and Band 6 opportunities available. Paediatric experience is desirable but not for Band 6 applicants. Applicants can join one of our informal tours of the theatre facilities or Children’s Hospital.
The theatre department has 8 theatres plus 1 Hybrid Lab over 2 floors. Our specialities range from joint injections, to complex cardiac and neurosurgery, and we are one of two hospitals in the UK equipped with an advanced 3 Tesla (3T) MRI scanner.
We have an excellent induction programme, which has helped to retain staff, and the senior staff are currently working with Divisional management to improve this further. On average we operate on 180 patients per week in all specialities, the diverse range of surgery gives staff an opportunity to develop in many areas or specialise in one. We receive patient referrals from across the UK, which helps to enhance our reputation as a department and Trust.
