Women and Children’s Services

There has never been a more exciting time to come and work as a Nurse here in Bristol within our Women and Children’s Services. We are expanding and investing in our hospitals, and all acute children’s services in Bristol – plus specialised services for the Region – have now been centralised here at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, to create a Centre of Excellence.

Our fantastic, purpose-built Children’s Hospital is loved by children, families and staff, and is the largest specialist Children’s Hospital in the South West and Wales. With the changes at St Michael’s Hospital, we assist with more than 5,500 births every year, including those within our new midwifery-led birthing unit. We are at the forefront of perinatal, neonatal and paediatric medical care and research, in the UK, and across Europe.

Bristol Royal Hospital for Children

We are the Regional Children’s Hospital for the South West region as well as a Major Trauma Centre and as such have helicopter transfers from primary injuries as well as secondary transfers from across the whole area. In April 2014 we became a Centre of Excellence in all regional and acute paediatric services inlcuding; Burns, Plastics, Trauma, and Neurosciences have also transferred here. These are in addition to our established paediatric specialities, including Renal, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Oncology, Haematology, and Cardiac, to name but a few. We are also home to a busy Children’s Emergency Department, medical and surgical wards, the regional Paediatric Intensive Care Unit, and the High Dependency Beds distributed across the hospital.

The Faculty of Children’s Nurse Education

Is a fantastic new asset, based within the hospital itself, and is staffed by a team of highly experienced children’s nurses. They provide education within our hospital, and deliver courses which are accredited with Universities in the South West at Degree and Masters level.

We are seeking experienced dynamic, energetic and committed Nurses and Theatre Practitioners with excellent organisational and interpersonal skills to join our fantastic teams within our hospital. We have practice development nurses who will provide structured support to your induction as well as a supernumerary period within your allocated area of practice. We aim for our new team members to develop within our teams, take active roles within our wards, learn new skills and provide excellent care to all patients and their families.

St Michael’s Hospital is home to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the Maternity Wards.

We provide all levels of specialist care for the sickest premature and newborn babies. In addition we have an outpatient follow up, to monitor the growth and development of the babies we have cared for. General medical, cardiac and surgical newborn care. Respiratory physiology and management, perinatal asphyxia and its treatment strategies (eg hypothermia).
